With the Allen game last night postponed I thought today would be a good day to take a look at some individual and team stats to see where the Americans stand.

INDIVIDUAL STAT LEADERS AND TEAM STATS

Below are the team leaders in various statistical categories with the league rank in parentheses:

Points:27 – Chad Costello (15th)22 – Spencer Asuchak (44th)22 – Gavin Gould (44th)

Goals:10 – Chad Costello (35th)8 – Spencer Asuchak (67th)8 – Branden Troock (67th)

Assists:17 – Chad Costello (10th)15 – Gavin Gould (29th)14 – Spencer Asuchak (39th)

Plus/Minus:+6 – Jack Combs (82nd)+5 – Darian Skeoch (100th)+5 – Branden Troock & Kris Myllari (100th)

Penalty Minutes:46 – Darian Skeoch (34th)42 – Spencer Asuchak (49th)40 – Dawson Butt (56th)

Assists by Defensemen11 – Eric Roy (19th)8 – Phil Beaulieu (49th)6 – Nolan Kneen & Ben Carroll (71st)

Save Percentage.927 – Antoine Bibeau (6th).891 – Hayden Lavigne (38th)

– If you can draw any conclusion from the individual stats above it would be how low the Americans rank in most of the categories. Some of that can be explained by the fact Allen has played fewer games than 21 of the 27 ECHL teams. Allen has played 24 games while several teams have played 30 games. The fewest games played is 22.

– Here is how the Americans rank in some critical statistical categories among the 27 ECHL teams:

Goal differential: #21 (-13)Average PIMS per game: #6 (16.25)Power play: #15 (18.5%)Penalty kill: #21 (78.1%)Ave. goals scored: #8 (3.42)Ave. goals against: #27 (3.96)Ave. shots for per game: #24 (28.42)Ave. shots against per game: #22 (34.29)Shooting percentage: #2 (11.9%)Team save percentage: #24 (.885)

– Allen has clearly played much better recently. As a comparison here are the same team stats for the last eight games the Americans have played:

Goal differential: +8Average PIMS per game: 14.00Power play: 18.5%Penalty kill: 77.4%Ave. goals scored: 4.13Ave. goals against: 3.13Ave. shots for per game: 31.63Ave. shots against per game: 32.63Shooting percentage: 13.0%Team save percentage: .908

– The good news in comparing the full season stats to the last eight games is the team is scoring more (4.13 vs 3.42) and allowing fewer goals (3.13 vs 3.96). The bad news is the special teams haven’t been any better the last eight games than the first 16 games.

– When Allen won the Kelly Cup in 2014-15 and led the league with an average of 4.06 goals per game it allowed 2.82 goals per game for a differential +1.24. The following season (2015-16) when the Americans won their second Kelly Cup they averaged just 3.08 goals per game and allowed 2.83 goals per game for a goal differential of +0.25. Overall this season Allen’s goal differential is -0.54 but over the last eight games it has been +1.00. That is a lot of improvement in a short period of time.

– It is clear the area in need of the most improvement is special teams. If you combine the power play percentage and penalty kill percentage anything above 105% is considered excellent and anything below 100% needs improvement. Allen’s current combined percentage is just 96.6% and it has not improved even as the Americans have been winning. It is hard to see the Americans being successful if they don’t see improvement on special teams. The combined percentages in the championship seasons were 109.4% (2014-15) and 107.5% (2015-16).

– In 24 games this season Allen has scored four shorthanded goals and allowed 10. In 2014-15 Allen scored 13 shorthanded goals and allowed eight in 72 games. In 2015-16 Allen scored nine shorthanded goals and allowed 10 in 72 games.
