Allen Signs College Defenseman Andrew Jarvis, Roster Update, Playing with the Lead and More

The Allen Americans have one more day to practice and relax before they take on a grueling rest of the week with four games in five days. Anytime a team plays four games in five days it is difficult and even more so if travel is involved but rarely does it happen when you play a game and move on with all single games before the next stop. With three of the four games against Tulsa seems like the schedulers could have found a way to play back to back games. As it is the Americans will start tomorrow night at home (Tulsa) and then one game each at Tulsa (Friday), Kansas City (Saturday) and Tulsa (Sunday).

– After playing short two skaters and using an EBUG in the loss to Tulsa on Saturday the Americans will be able to field a full team on Wednesday. Hayden Lavigne is back from his two game stint in the AHL. According to coach Martinson, Branden Troock, Jared Bethune and Zach Hall will be available on Wednesday.

– Allen signed defensemen Andrew Jarvis yesterday who is one of many Canadian college players turning pro because their seasons have been paused. Jarvis played for Carleton University which is a member of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA). The OUA has paused sports until at least January 24 with the possibility of extending the pause. There are four different membership groups (conferences in US) that make up USports college hockey in Canada and they all have handled COVID differently. Ontario is one of the most restrictive provinces. One of the other groups (Canada West) is continuing with the season and is back playing after the Christmas break. Zane Franklin plays for the University of Saskatchewan in Canada West.

– From my reporting, Jarvis is at least the fifth player from his college team to turn pro. A couple signed in Europe, one with Kalamazoo and one with Cincinnati. By any standard Jarvis is small for an ECHL defenseman. HockeyDB has him at 5’7″ and 180 pounds, Elite Prospects has 5’9″ 181 pounds and his college team shows 5’9′ and 175 pounds. In 61 games at Carleton, Andrew had 20 points (2G, 18A).

– Allen defenseman Darian Skeoch probably had something to do with Jarvis signing in Allen as they were teammates at Carleton University in 2019-20.

– Jarvis played his junior hockey (Junior A) for the Brockville Braves where he was team captain for two seasons. In his five seasons with Brockville he played in 229 games and scored 119 points (26G, 93A) and had 227 penalty minutes. Here is a video from his last year in Brockville (2017) before he went to college. https://youtu.be/duPzIGa_JnQ

– You never know how successful players turning pro from college will be in the ECHL. Based on his size and background, playing in the second tier Junior A, I would expect Jarvis will be a depth defenseman for the Americans. With Nolan Kneen in Charlotte and Darian Skeoch injured the Americans have been playing with five defensemen so Jarvis is a welcome addition with Allen playing four games in five days.

OTHER COMMENTS

– I have written about this in the past but continue to get questions concerning the Commissioner’s Exempt List. It is important to remember it is not intended to be a comprehensive list of all players in COVID protocol. Teams aren’t required to put COVID positive players on the list. The reason teams add players to the exempt list is they don’t count against the roster or the salary cap. If roster space or salary cap isn’t an issue, teams don’t have to put players on the list. The reason for the list is to give teams relief from roster limits and the salary cap if they have to add players for those in COVID protocol.

– Allen lost its last game but remains one of just three ECHL teams with eight or more wins in the last 10 games:

  • 9-1-0-0: Jacksonville
  • 8-1-1-0: Cincinnati
  • 8-2-0-0: Allen

– Newfoundland has played a league low 22 games and Trois Rivieres is not far behind at 24. Both teams will not play again until January 21.

– With COVID and the implementation of the NHL taxis squads a lot of ECHL players have been loaned to AHL teams. The AHL has also been greatly impacted. I saw this from the AHL yesterday. 100 AHL grads from 30 teams have made their NHL debuts so far in the 2021-22 season.

– Congrats to former Allen goalie Jeremy Brodeur of the Maine Mariners who was selected as the ECHL Goalie of the Week for last week. Jeremy was 2-0 with a 1.50 GAA and .958 save percentage.

DID YOU KNOW: On a personal note my ECHL Stats page just passed 1700 Twitter followers and 650 followers (page likes) on Facebook. Not enough ECHL fans are aware of ECHL Stats so help me spread the word and if you are on Twitter or Facebook give ECHL Stats a follow (Twitter) or Like (Facebook). Just one post per day, each morning. By the way I make no money off the blog or the ECHL Stats and never will. It is all for fun and to share info I come across each day. Today the ECHL stats post is about playing with the lead. FYI, Allen’s record when leading after the first period is 5-2-1-0 and when leading after the second period is 5-0-1-0.

With 40% of the season in the books, here are the four ECHL teams with a perfect record when leading after the second period. Don’t plan a comeback against this group!13-0-0-0: Newfoundland13-0-0-0: Utah11-0-0-0: Tulsa9-0-0-0: AdirondackJacksonville is the toughest team when it comes to playing with a lead. The Icemen are 10-0-0-0 when leading after the first period and 11-0-0-1 when leading after the second period.
