Ontario, California – The Ontario Reign have pushed the Allen Americans to the brink of elimination after a 5-0 win on Saturday night, at Citizens Bank Arena. The Americans trail 3-1 in the series and need a win tomorrow night to stay alive.
The Reign scored three goals in a two-minute span, stretching from late in the first period, to the first 90 seconds of the second period. David Rutherford deflected home a Matt Register shot to give the Reign a 1-0 lead at the 19:30 mark of the first. Ontario took a 1-0 lead to the intermission. They opened the second period with two quick goals; from Tristen King and Matt White to open up a 3-0 lead. Gary Nunn scored on the power play at 8:45 of the second as Ontario built a 4-0 lead. Rutherford netted his second of the game on the power play at the 7:45 mark to make it 5-0 and the Reign never looked back.
Riley Gill was pulled after the 4th Ontario goal giving way to backup Joel Rumpel. Rumpel was solid, stopping 12 of 13 Ontario shots. Allen outshot the Reign 31-24 for the game, but went 0-3 on the power play and is now 0-12 with the man-advantage in their last three games. Ontario was 2-12.
The Americans need a win tomorrow night to extend the series to a Game 6 next Tuesday night in Allen. Puck drop on Sunday evening is 8:05 pm Central Time.
