Game Highlights

Boise, Idaho -The Allen Americans, ECHL affiliate of the San Jose Sharks, opened up their 2017-2018 playoff campaign by defeating the Idaho Steelheads 3-2 on Friday night.

Jake Paterson would get the start in net for the Americans. Philip Desrosiers would get his first start in net for the Steelheads since March 4th after being sent back down from the Texas Stars. It wouldn’t take long for the two teams to get physical with each other, as Mike Gunn and Jack Nevins would receive a 5-minute major for fighting early in the first period. Braylon Shymr would start the Americans playoff campaign off to a good start after scoring his first career playoff goal giving the Americans a 1-0 lead. Two minutes later Bryan Moore would head to the penalty box to serve a two-minute minor penalty for roughing. It would only take five seconds for the Steelheads to convert on the power play. Aaron Harstad scored five-on-four for the Steelheads to even the game at 1-1. With less than three minutes left in the first period David Makowski cashed in on a Steelheads turnover to give the Americans a 2-1 lead heading into the second period.

The Steelheads would start the second frame strong. Steven McParland would score in the first two minutes of play in the second period to tie the game once again at 2-2. The Americans would get their first power play opportunity of the night after a Joe Faust tripping penalty. Allen failed to convert. Tommy Thompson would give the Americans another power play opportunity after committing a two-minute minor penalty for kneeing Alex Guptill. The Americans would fail to convert on their second power play of the night.

After 40 minutes of play both teams would head into the third period tied 2-2. Four minutes into the third Zach Pochiro and Max French would head to the penalty box to serve a two-minute minor penalty for roughing. At the midway point of the third period Bryan Moore would break the tie scoring three-on-one break. The game would end 3-2 and the Americans would claim the victory to take a 1-0 series lead. Jake Paterson stopped 27 out of 29 shots faced. Below is the three stars of the game as voted on by the Idaho media.

“We played the way the right way. The way we need to play to be successful,” said Americans Head Coach Steve Martinson. We limited our turnovers and played sound defensively. Jake Paterson was solid.”
