AMERICANS NAME CASEY PIERRO-ZABOTEL PLAYER/ASSISTANT FOR 2017-2018 SEASON

Allen, Texas – The Allen Americans, ECHL affiliate of the San Jose Sharks, and Head Coach Steve Martinson announced today that veteran forward Casey Pierro-Zabotel has been named a Player/Assistant Coach for the 2017-2018 season.

Pierro-Zabotel returned to Allen after playing with the Colorado Eagles last season, winning his second straight Kelly Cup. Casey was a part of the 2016 Allen Americans team that beat Wheeling in six games.

“This is a huge honor to be asked to be a player/assistant coach,” said Casey Pierro-Zabotel. “To come back to the team where I won my first championship and help them win more in years to come is my goal. To be able to learn from the guy (Steve Martinson) who has won so many championships will help me out tremendously. I took this opportunity to help me in life after hockey. I hope to retire here in Allen and hopefully be able to help coach here one day.”

When asked how his relationship with his teammates might change with his new role in Allen, Pierro-Zabotel didn’t hesitate in answering the question.

“I don’t plan on changing the relationships I have with the guys in the room. I plan to keep my leadership role the same.”

The former sixth round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins has played in 478 combined ECHL games with Wheeling, Cincinnati, Bakersfield, Gwinnett, Florida, Colorado and Allen. He started his pro career in the American Hockey League with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in 2009, playing in nine games.

“He’s one of the smartest players I’ve ever had,” said Americans Head Coach Steve Martinson. “He has the experience of playing in all situations, power play and penalty kill, and can help the younger players. He has a wealth of experience.”

The Americans open training camp next week at Allen Event Center, with the team opening the regular season on the road in Rapid City on Friday, October 13th. Tickets for the home opener against Orlando on October 21st are on sale NOW at Allen Event Center Box Office. Call 972-912-1000for more information.
